In March, Kappa Delta Rho at Penn State was suspended after a private facebook group within the fraternity became public. The page contained evidence of hazing, drug transactions, and also pictures of nude girls passed out. The page sparked several rallies to support the women who were victimized by the fraternity.
This is just the latest incident of a fraternity being severely disciplined for taking things too far and acting extremely inappropriately. Drugs, hazing, and sexual violence have all been subjects under which fraternities have come under scrutiny. Fraternities all around the nation are being removed from campuses for poor behavior and judgment.
Penn State University president Eric Barron believes that it may be time for the school to re-evaluate the greek system as a whole at the university. “Some members of the university senior leadership believe it is, and we are considering our options,” said Barron in a column published in Penn Live after the incident.
Earlier in this school year, both Clemson University and West Virginia University suspended all fraternity activity amid deaths of pledges.
With all the discipline that is handed down on fraternities, and also the lowered level of tolerance that has developed for greek organizations over the past couple decades, one may wonder whether or not fraternities will even be around in the future.
