Melanie Lynch has been a health teacher at State College Area High School in State College, Pa. for the past 20 years, but her unique and unusual teaching methods aren't the only thing that sets her apart from her fellow teachers at State High. Lynch spends her weekdays in the classroom, but on weekends she's a member of the State College Area Rollers roller derby team.
Growing up, Lynch found that she was able to bond with her father over roller derby after her parents divorced, and ever since she dreamed of being a derby girl. Almost forty years later, she met a derby girl from the State College Area Rollers who convinced her that it wasn't too late to fulfill her dream. She was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained at a practice for the team in July, but has been working her way back onto her skates through physical therapy since September.
